A lightweight NZXT CAM alternative

NZXT CAM runs your Kraken screen, fan and pump curves, monitoring and lighting. If lighting is what you're after, RGB Engine does that one job from a single small app. It lights NZXT Hue 2 and RGB & Fan Controller gear, plus the other brands in your case, using about 15 MB of RAM.

Why switch to RGB Engine

You don't need CAM to make your NZXT lights look great. RGB Engine does that one job, for your NZXT gear and everything else in the case.

Which NZXT parts work

RGB Engine talks to your hardware through OpenRGB, which comes included. OpenRGB lists NZXT's Hue 2 family (Hue 2, Hue 2 Ambient, Smart Device V2 and the RGB & Fan Controller) and older Kraken coolers like the X3 series. Newer Krakens such as the Elite and Plus aren't named, so check the OpenRGB device list first. OpenRGB handles lighting only, not fan or pump speed.

Switching from NZXT CAM

  1. If CAM runs your fan or pump curves, set curves in your BIOS first. NZXT says CAM-powered Krakens run fixed default speeds without it.
  2. In Windows Settings, open Apps, then Installed apps, find NZXT CAM, choose Uninstall and confirm. The uninstaller leaves your settings behind, so open %AppData%, then Roaming, and delete or rename the NZXT CAM folder.
  3. Open RGB Engine and run the two-minute setup: it lights each part of your PC and you say what you see. Or skip it and start with a sensible default.

Questions

Do I need CAM running for my Kraken?

For custom fan and pump curves and the screen, yes. NZXT says that without CAM, Krakens fall back to fixed default pump and fan speeds instead of switching off, and the Kraken Plus screen only shows liquid temperature. Set your curves in the BIOS if you drop CAM.

Does NZXT CAM need an account?

Not anymore. NZXT removed sign-in in CAM 4.50 because of login problems affecting many users. CAM still sends anonymous usage data by default, which you can turn off in its Privacy settings. RGB Engine doesn't send anything.

How do I fully uninstall NZXT CAM?

Uninstall it from Windows Settings, Apps, Installed apps. NZXT says the uninstaller doesn't remove your settings, so delete or rename the NZXT CAM folder in %AppData%\Roaming afterwards.

Can I run RGB Engine and CAM at the same time?

Not on the same lights. Two RGB apps fighting over the same lights makes them flicker or stop responding. If you keep CAM for cooling, leave your NZXT lighting to CAM.
